Sailing Ursa

Sailing the Sea of Cortez

The Sea of Cortez is a world class sailing destination, in the sea you will find whales, dolphins, mobula rays and sea lions playing in the water beside you. Along the shore you'll find some world class snorkeling and diving and on land you'll be able to visit some beautiful natural environments as well as lively modern towns.

Over the last few years cruising here, I've collated a bunch of resources which I believe will be of interest to prospective sailors visiting the area for the first time, or for those who are familiar with the area and are looking for some new anchorages to visit or some information on specific areas.

The information here doesn't represent a replacement for one of the many excellent cruising guides, nor is it a replacement for a good set of charts and proper seamanship, but they hopefully will help you along the way.

You can view our notes from all the anchorages we've stayed at, those where you can stock up with some food, and our favorite places to be.

SV Ursa at anchor in La Paz, BCS

Ursa is a Valiant 40, cutter rigged sail boat. Ursa and I have been sailing together since 2017 when I purchased her in Ventura California. Since then we've sailed around the Channel Islands, then south to San Diego, Pacific Mexico and the Sea of Cortez. Join us on our journey as we continue south to the patagonian Fjords, whilst doing a floating refit of our classic sailing boat.

I'm a digital nomad working primarily with early stage startups to turn their business idea into a technical product, and spend most of my time working from boat, with short bouts ashore when needed. When I'm not sailing, you'll find me in my workshop where I enjoy getting my hands dirty with automotive and metal working projects, or in the mountains hiking and climbing.
