About this Anchorage

Punta Salinas is a great stop for lunch, and in calm weather makes a nice overnight stop too. Ashore you can visit the former salt farm, which has been abandoned. From the boat in the winter months you'll be able to watch whales as they transit the San Jose Channel.

The anchorage itself offers reasonable protection from the north, but swell tends to wrap around, and if the wind picks up from the south, it can become untenable quickly, although you can simply move to the north side of the point.

The salt ponds are a great day trip ashore, there is a variety of abandon equipment scattered around the former grounds, and you can wander through and around the salt ponds which take on their own colours depending on the the liquid content and the angle of the sun.

Anchoring Notes

In northerly weather, anchor in 20-30ft off the south shore, it shoals rapidly quite close to shore, but holding is good and you'll get good protection from the swell if not the wind.

In southerly weather anchor of the beach on the north side in 20ft of water over sand.

Often here the wind will reverse at night, which can put you on a dangerous lee shore, so make sure you know what you are going to do if you have to bug out in a hurry.
