Bahia Amortajada is a great spot to explore the nearby lagoon on the south end of Isla San Jose, as well as a good base for exploring the islands to the south, the the salt ponds to the north.
The main attraction here is the lagoon, you can go by kayak, or take the dinghy through, and either do a full loop around the south west corner of the island, or go into the lagoon and back out. The south entrance is shallower, and it pays to check the tides before going in.
Just to the south there are a series of islands and rocks which can be explored by big boat (with care) and dinghy in calm weather, with options for snorkeling as well as a semi deserted fishing village.
At the north end of the bay is Punta Salinas which is a great day trip to explore the abandoned salt ponds.
Anchoring Notes
The north side offers great protection from southerly weather, although no significant protection from the night time westerlies. Anchor anywhere along the north shore, it shoals in places, so keep an eye on the depth sounder. We anchor in around 20ft usually a hundred meters or more off shore to be out of reach of the bobo's and no-see-ums.
If the weather is from the north, you'll get a better nights sleep on the south shore of the island. We anchor on 15ft of sand which is still a good distance off shore, roughly inline with the entrance to the lagoon.
Be sure to check your charts carefully in this area as there are many offshore rocks and hidden dangers nearby.
